2020.11.15 FDR Made Owning Gold Illegal
In 1933 U.S. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, FDR, issued Executive Order 6102 making it illegal to own gold currency. The country was suffering financially at this time known as the Great Depression.
Americans were not allowed to own gold coins, bars bullion, or certificates. They were required to turn in any gold in exchange for paper money. Anyone caught with gold could be fined up to double the value and imprisoned for up to 10 years.
Gold ownership remained illegal until 1977 when President Ford issued Pub.L. 93–373.
I learned this reading a Curious Minds, a 2018 novel from Janet Evanovich.
